‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Season Two Finale Recap & Review

The season two finale of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ was easily one of the most violent episodes of the series, and brought about several character deaths.

In the aftermath of Madison’s decision to turn on the lights, the group at the hotel is still dealing with the refugees that flooded into the parking lot; which now includes the two guys that Chris went off with, Brandon and Derek.

Madison quickly puts it together that they are the ones Chris was with, and learns that Chris is dead. She tries to get them out of sight before Travis learns what really happened to Chris, but he eventually sees them. When he learns about Chris’ fate, Travis finally unleashes the rage that has seemingly been building and beats Brandon and Derek to death.

In the midst of the fight, Oscar tries to intervene and Travis knocks him unconscious. Once things settle down Elena, Hector and Andrés take Travis away to seclusion. Realizing that they have to go, Madison, Travis and Alicia make a deal to leave in the morning. During the night, Oscar dies after Andrés tries to save him. Angry over the death of his brother, Andrés and Hector attack Travis in the room.

Alicia ends up stabbing and killing Andrés in an effort to save Travis. Strand, who already told Madison that he wouldn’t leave with them, ends up helping them get away, but ultimately stays at the hotel.

Nick tries to make the deal with Marco, but Marco tells him they don’t need them anymore. He warns Nick to leave the Colonia, because his group was gearing up to attack the village. He returns and when he is telling Alejandro and Luciana what happened, one of the patients in the infirmary turns and attacks. Alejandro gets bit, and two other patients are attacked as well.

Nick takes Marco’s advice and leaves, but sees a helicopter in the distance. Upon a closer look, he sees what he thinks may be a refugee camp. Nick returns to the Colonia to tell Alejandro, who isn’t immune to walker bites after all, and they make a plan to save the people. When Marco arrives, the people of the Colonia are gone, except for Alejandro. He stays behind to move the bus once Marco’s gang has gotten into the village, letting the infected at the wall corner and attack them.

Ofelia finally makes it to the border wall as the truck overheats and dies. She has to take down a few infected, but does so without hesitation or fear. After walking the fence for some time, she finds a place to cross over and is promptly shot at. The last we see of her, she is being approached by an older man with a gun, and he doesn’t exactly look friendly.

How it all Wraps Up…

Nick leads his group from the Colonia to the border and see a camp in the distance. They are also shot at and several of the people are killed, and Luciana is shot. The rest of the people take off running, while Nick and Luciana are surrounded by men in tactical gear and weapons.

Madison, Travis and Alicia find their way to the Colonia, after stopping at the warehouse in the search for Nick. They come upon Alejandro who confirms Nick had been there, but was going towards the border.

Even though he decided to stay at the hotel, I can’t imagine we won’t see a lot more of Victor Strand in ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ season 3.

Episode Highlights…

  • The infected attack in the infirmary was by far one of the most bloody of the season. A poor guy not only had his nose ripped off, but that walker chomped down right on that woman’s finger. Nick finally stopped him by shoving his thumbs deep enough through the walker’s eye sockets until he did enough damage to the brain.
  • Travis finally let loose! I don’t know about you, but I know I cheered him on! He knew exactly how those guys operated because of what happened to their friend James. He knew that Chris was hurt, and they killed him. Because of that, he couldn’t contain the rage he felt and took it out on their faces. It was one of the most violent sequences in the series yet, and clearly said that Travis is a changed man.
  • Alicia also joined the ‘human kill club’ that her mother and stepfather now belong too. By killing Andrés to protect Travis, she may have done a bit of damage to her psyche, but I think it cemented their now, family of three, together in a way they weren’t before.
  • The death of Chris Manawa. Usually when a character crosses over to the great beyond, there is a feeling of sadness or regret. Personally, I think Chris was the best character out of our core group to go. His death pushed Travis to change, and if he didn’t, he would have been the one to go. My only issue with Chris’ death was it felt a little anticlimactic. You could almost predict that Brandon and Derek were going to treat Chris the same way they treated James. While I am sad to lose Lorenzo James Henrie as a member of the cast, I really do believe it was Chris’ time to go.

‘Fear’ has a lot of ups and downs during its second season run, but the way this 2-hour finale ended, I am excited to see where season 3 will take us. I am curious to see if Madison, Travis and Alicia will be reunited with Nick. Is Ofelia safe with this stranger? Who are the crazy militant types a the border that were shooting at Nick and Luciana?

What did you think of the season finale of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’? Will you be tuning in for season 3 when the show returns in 2017?
