“Yo ho! Yo ho! A pirate’s life for me!”
The first teaser trailer for the upcoming film from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, premiered on Sunday night.
In the teaser trailer, we meet Captain Salazar, played by Oscar-winner Javier Bardam. The ghostly Captain Salazar and his crew mercilessly take over another crew’s ship. Upon entering a below deck jail, Salazar spots a “wanted” poster for Jack Sparrow. He confronts a young man being held in the jail cell, asking if he has heard of Sparrow. When the boy confirms he has heard of Sparrow “only by name,” Salazar requests that he find him and relay a message to him. The message? “Death comes straight for him.” Pretty demanding and ominous, right? But, to be fair, Salazar does at least say, “please”.
While the film is set to have Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush all reprising their roles from the previous films, they are noticeably absent from the first teaser. Despite their absence, the teaser definitely has a creepy overtone and an obvious feeling of a darker storyline than that of what we have seen in the past from the Pirates films.
