Samuel L. Jackson Believes S.H.I.E.L.D. Will Return To The Marvel Cinematic Universe
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, the question of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe arose due to Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) notable absence, but the former Director believes that his character along with S.H.I.E.L.D. will reappear in future Marvel films.
When asked if S.H.I.E.L.D. still has a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jackson told ComingSoon.net:
“Yeah! For sure, definitely. Why wouldn’t there be? There’s some way of fixing what they created, and hopefully somebody has that going on or Nick Fury is out there – wherever he is, probably hanging out with Jules and walking the world – figuring out what happened and how it got to that particular place. Maybe they’ll find out that all that was part of a ruse to get to something else also. That would be great. They’ll bring me back somehow, some way, for some reason. I mean, they didn’t have me around to referee the kids when they didn’t go to their rooms and got in this big old fight. We’ll see what happens.”
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, screenwriter Christopher Markus admitted that Fury was deliberately kept away from Civil War. “He’s been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they’re supposed to be without the governing voice. Um… and they didn’t do that good of a job.”
“We didn’t want him [Fury] to take one side or the other, because that’s not his place in the universe. And then we didn’t want another ‘Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?” It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for,” Markus continued.
Jackson believes he may return in Avengers: Infinity War but as of now, that is still an ‘if’. His return also raises the question as to whether Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will join him. Maria Hill was last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron while Phil Coulson (presumed to be killed in action in The Avengers) went on to lead his own team in the current series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. With so many Marvel Cinematic references in the series, Jackson making an appearance in season 1’s finale, the introduction of the Inhumans and Ghost Rider, and the new Director (Jason O’Mara) working to legitimize the agency once again, it wouldn’t be a big leap for Coulson – or any of the characters in Marvel’s television universe – to pop up in the MCU at any time.
