Marvel has found who will be playing the titular role of Captain Marvel. The search for the film’s director is still on, though.
But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the director field is slowly narrowing. It has been rumored that the list of names that Marvel Studios is looking at include Lorene Scafaria, Lesli Linka Glatter, and Niki Caro. The three women all have varied experience behind the camera from small screen sitcoms and dramas to the big screen.
Scafaria’s director credits include episodes of New Girl as well as the film, Seeking a Friend For The End of The World. She was also the writer behind Nick and Nora‘s Infinite Playlist and served as consulting producer for Ben and Kate as well as Meryl Streep’s Ricki and The Flash.
Glatter’s time behind the camera began with short film Tales of Meeting and Parting and spans multiple television networks and genres from episodes of Twin Peaks and NYPD Blue to her recent work behind the camera on Showtime’s Homeland and HBO’s The Leftovers.
Caro’s credits include directing the Oscar-nominated film, Whale Rider, as well as sports film McFarland, USA, and her most recent work on The Zookeeper’s Wife.
Though these three names are currently floating around as potential directors, there may be more on the horizon. But from the varied experiences behind the camera of this trio of contenders, Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie is starting to take shape. When paired with Larson’s casting as Carol Danvers herself, it’s a very exciting time to be a fan of the Marvel comic book series and character.
What do you think of the potential Captain Marvel shortlist? Who would you put on the movie’s shortlist?
Captain Marvel‘s tentative release date is sometime in 2019.
