Over the weekend, Coldplay took over Pasadena, California to perform two shows at the Rose Bowl. On Sunday night’s show, the band wanted to pay tribute to one of the greats which we lost this year, Prince.
In order to do so, Chris Martin told a story of one additional bandmate forged his own path and who hadn’t joined them on tour but, who was there for this special song. Martin said, “You may know him from things like Carpool Karaoke and that kind of sh–, but we know him as the guy who turned down being in a band with us.” The remainder of Martin’s introduction is barely audible as cheers from the crowd take over as host of The Late Late Show James Corden joins Coldplay on stage.
Corden steps to the mic and says, “Thanks for letting me back in the band, guys. I appreciate it. This was an idea that Chris said to me — he said, ‘I think you should come and sing this at the Rose Bowl.’ I’ll be honest: I didn’t know how big it was when I said yes, so, I’m a bit nervous but, thanks to the four of you, on behalf of this audience, as I am just a fan, for this incredible night you’ve given us all…”
Corden then joins Coldplay for an amazing cover of Nothing Compares 2U, recorded by Sinead O’Conner but, written by the man himself, Prince. Corden has shown his musical talents in his many Carpool Karaoke segments however, it’s refreshing to hear him actually sing in a concert setting.
