‘Finding Dory’ Has Biggest Box Office Opening for an Animated Movie

It’s been 13 years in the making but, Finding Dory has certainly made a huge splash in theaters this weekend as the highly anticipated animated film broke box office records in its opening weekend.

Disney-Pixar’s Finding Dory made a whopping $136.2 million during its opening weekend, setting a box-office record for an animated film.  The previous record for an animated film opening was held by Shrek the Third which grossed $121.6 million in 2007. Pixar’s personal opening weekend record previously belonged to Toy Story 3, which opened to $110 million in 2010.

Disney-Pixar’s Finding Dory takes place approximately six months after Finding Nemo and focuses on everyone’s favorite forgetful fish friend.  Dory is living happily amongst her new clown fish family and their friends until she sets out on a journey to find her home and her parents.  Ellen DeGeneres (Dory) and Albert Brooks (Marlin) have returned to reprise their roles from the 2003 classic, Finding Nemo.  They will also be joined by a series of guest stars, including Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, and Idris Elba.  You can check out the trailer for Finding Dory HERE

Finding Dory is expected to rule the family film market, at least until Disney’s The BFG hits theaters on July 1st and The Secret Life of Pets pounces onto the big screen on July 8th.  In addition, the film received an “A” grade according to the CinemaScore Market Research Firm.

One thing is for sure, fans are expected to just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming in to see Finding Dory throughout the summer.
