‘The Walking Dead’: Will the TV series overtake the Comic Book Series?

With the Game of Thrones television series on a fast track to surpass George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice book series quite soon, fans of The Walking Dead have been questioning if the The Walking Dead television series will also overtake the source material within the next season or two.

Let’s face it, Season 6 of The Walking Dead was insanely full of pretty awesome action and excitement from the comic book series. The Walking Dead television series raced through an impressive 25 issues of the comic series, starting with subject with Issue 75 and ending with the Issue 100. Because of that, some fans were worried that the show would eventually catch up to or surpass the comics in the timeline. The quick pace of Season 6 has raised concern that the television series may catch up to the comic book series by the end of Season 8/beginning of Season 9.

With no source material available to guide the way, would the AMC hit television series become lost? Given the rather large fan-base that The Walking Dead carries, I find this highly unlikely.

Although, I will play the devil’s advocate and understand the concern that loyal Dead universe fans have.

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman was quick to ease fans concerns with the following comments:

I can see how going from #75 to #100 in 8 episodes may cause some concern. But the show does double back on the comic from time to time, like presenting the Billy and Ben plot in a new way. Plus we’re still 54 issues ahead… Or really, 54 and a half since the cliffhanger interrupted the events of #100…

Yeah, look at it this way … it took us 6 seasons to get to 100. It won’t take us 6 years to get to 200 and that will take us to season TWELVE. And we’ll still be ahead of the show at that point. And if the show is still going strong at season 12 … well, that would be about the most amazing thing ever … so we’ll all be too busy celebrating to worry about anything.

So, if you had any concerns about the television series getting too far ahead from the comic book source material, Robert Kirkman clearly has
you in his thoughts and does not want you to worry!

The Walking Dead returns in October.
