J.K. Simmons talks Commissioner Gordon

In March it was announced that academy award winner J.K. Simmons would be taking on the iconic role of Commissioner James Gordon. In comic history Gordon has always had an interesting relationship with the Dark Knight and very recently even wore the cowl himself.

This of course is not the commissioner we will see, with an older what should be wiser Batman our Gordon will most likely be much like the Commissioner Gordon we saw in The Dark Knight Rises. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice we saw snippets of Gotham but we were given no idea the state of the city. If Gordon has been on this adventure with Batman since he started they for sure have seen some stuff, we know they have defeated The Joker and have lost a Robin one way or another. Gotham is never depicted as an easy city to live in let alone police, we are talking about a Gotham that Zack Snyder is designing and we know he likes for his characters to suffer. So we may see a sarcastic witty Gordon or battle tired grumpy Gordon, only time shall tell!

J.K. Simmons recently sat down to talk about his upcoming film The Meddler with DP/30. The Justice
League came up and Simmons of course didn’t reveal much about his character butdid say a little more about the role in the Justice League movie,

“I don’t get started on that until June, and my part in the first one is very small. I’m excited to be playing that iconic character in that iconic series.”

That makes sense that the role would be small, many people think that Justice League will be a Darkseid movie and it is
doubtful that it will take place in Gotham. Though I am not writing the movie, so in Snyder’s
universe maybe all the superhero cities are next door to each other! Much like with Batman v Superman, Justice League is probably going to set up a lot of stories or at least introduce characters for the solo movies that will
follow. Simmons went on to talk about joining this ever expanding universe,

“I’m going into a thing that hopefully will be two, three, four, maybe more movies for me, and my part in the first one is really very small. But obviously, we know who the guy is. We know his whole backstory, based on the comic book. So,
I’m just gonna finish doing my research on that. And probably not watch the other actors who have played the part, because that is kind of intimidating, honestly, and I don’t think I would find that to be productive. So, I’ll do my take.”

The most recent version of the character we have seen on the big screen is, Gary Oldman in the Nolan series. In that trilogy Nolan and Oldman did a perfect job of giving a character that is often sort of flat a lot of depth. He is personally one of my favorite versions of the character, closely tied with Commissioner Gordon in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.

Snyder’s world seemed to be inspired greatly by that iconic graphic novel. I hope we get to see some of that Gordon in the future!
