Disney is staking out some serious cinema real estate. Today, Variety reported Disney has been setting up release dates as far out as 2019 and has confirmed some awesome upcoming films as well.
The studio confirmed a sequel to the super successful The Jungle Book movie and announced that Angelina Jole will be resuming her role in Maleficent for round 2 of the film. Disney is also planning a sequel to Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda from Broadway’s Hamilton set to star.
A spin-off of 101 Dalmatians has been confirmed. The film will be called Cruella and is set to star Emma Stone. Disney has also confirmed that it is moving forward with an adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time with Ava DuVernay as director, The Jungle Cruise (one of my favorite Disney World rides) starring Dwayne Johnson, a Tinker Bell project starring Reese Witherspoon and, an adaptation of my personal favorite Disney film ever, Dumbo with Tim Burton onboard to direct a live-action version of the 1941 cartoon. The studio also confirmed a few other projects including a movie called The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which, we can guess, will be released around Christmas.
The studio has reportedly snatched up several release dates but have not confirmed which films will be released on what dates. The Jungle Book and Mary Poppins sequels are farther along in their development process and will likely be among the films released on the dates below.
