Krysten Ritter On Not Playing ‘Jessica Jones’ Like A Superhero

Jessica Jones herself Krysten Ritter says she has never played Jessica like a superhero! What?

“When I was building the character, I felt like if I threw a punch and somebody is going through a wall because of it that was because she was so strong inside. [Her powers] was just an extension of what she really is.” – Ritter.

The series creator, Melissa Rosenburg, chimed in and also feels like this isn’t a superhero story.

“We were always approaching the powers as a matter-of-fact. Its simply who she is… It didn’t feel I was approaching it has a female character… It was really about building a character, not being defined by her gender” but “informed by it.” – Rosenburg.

Ritter couldn’t agree more. She said she loved how Jessica was “informed… by her past, how vulnerable she is, how strong, how powerful she is. Also she’s very cool… there are so many layers for me to play as an actor.”

The emphasis in the show is on character development, not action.

Some of my favorite moments are when Jessica is alone at her house and how she relates to a whiskey bottle.” – Rosenburg.

The Netflix series, which premiered in November has been renewed for a second season. Unfortunately, that may take a bit longer than expected. This is due to scheduling conflicts with The Defenders.

Both Jessica Jones and The Defenders are set to begin filming soon.
