Looks like Bates Motel is going back to its Hitchcockian roots this season. That is, if the latest trailer is anything to go by.

Through grainy black and white shots, we are transported into the abyss we’ve come to know as Norman’s mind. The abyss is deeper and darker now, only allowing us to see and hear both Norma and Mother from a distance. There are nostalgia-inducing shots and dialogue from early on in the show as well as moments we haven’t yet seen come to pass. It’s a horrifying mixture of love and death; or nurturing and complete destruction. It’s Norman’s psychosis taking over the screen and giving us a glimpse of the horror that’s sure to come.

Earlier trailers have shown Norman donning Norma’s robes, taking on Mother’s persona, and scaring the daylights out of Norma and everyone else. All this while Norma continues to seek help for a situation that she’s obviously ill-equipped to handle. It’s a tragic situation no matter how you look at it…but I suppose that’s why we watch.

Traditionally, this show has steered clear of following its 1960’s predecessor too closely. This is great because we get an entirely different perspective on what has been and still remains a classic American film. The strange thing, though, is that so many of us Bates fans know where the story is ultimately going to go and this new trailer certainly takes bit closer to that inevitable end. I’m looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.
