Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed the main villain in the upcoming film. I’ll give you a hint, he’s big. Despite rumors, no it’s not Galactus (that giant, planet-eating guy from Fantastic Flop 2) and it’s not him because Fox won’t give the rights to him (because they have to ruin characters all by themselves). Instead, Gunn has revealed that Ego the Living Planet will be our villain. For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, he’s a scientist merged with planet gone awry. Ego was created in 1966 by Jack Kirby who, at the time, was creating space gods like Galactus.
His story includes (I’m so sorry if any of this ends of being spoilers)
- His first appearance in Thor #132, a long history of battling Thor (I smell a Ragnarok connection)
- A rivalry with Galactus (who attaches an engine to Ego so he’s forced to wander space forever)
- A rivalry with Nova Corps
- A secret brother named Alter-Ego who is held captive by The CollectorA hilarious deal with our favorite sassy raccoon
Knowing all of this, Ego seems like a pretty good villain for the Guardians. His powers include: Super intelligence, Shape-shifting of the planet’s surface, ability to change his mass, and he is pretty much a living organism under the crust. Overall, he seems like a pretty good villain, even though he is kind of strange. I mean, a planet vs five people? Leave it Marvel to make that CGI fight scene.
