Supergirl Recap ‘Pilot’

The series premiere of Supergirl starts off with the destruction of Krypton. Kal-El and Kara Zor- El are both sent away, Kal a baby and Kara 12. She is to protect her cousin once they arrive on the new planet. However, Kara ends up in the Phantom Zone for 24 years. Her spacecraft finally manages to break free and she crash lands on Earth. Kal-El, now much older than Kara (who retained her 12-year-old physique) and fully realized as Superman, finds and takes her to an adoptive family, the Danvers. Kara grew up wanting to lead a normal life, but, at the age of 24, an accident with an airplane carrying her sister, Alex, faces Kara to reveal her true nature and save the plane. She then takes up the mantle of Supergirl.

After she reveals her powers, Kara decides that she needs to continue as Supergirl. She has always wanted to help people and believes that now is her chance. Alex isn’t too thrilled about that though. Later, Kara is shot down by a group called the DEO (Department of Extra-Normal Operations). Hank Henshaw, the head of the DEO, does not like that Supergirl revealed herself and thinks that that will only lead to an uprising from the other aliens on Earth. And, to make matters worse for Kara, Alex is actually an agent with the DEO. Kara storms out after finding out that she wasn’t alone in coming out of the Phantom Zone. A prison came with her and now all of the convicts aboard are loose on Earth.

The main villain of the episode is named Vartox. He is under orders to kill Supergirl. It also turns out that her mother was the one that imprisoned all the convicts aboard the prison ship. At first meeting, Vartox almost kills Kara, but Alex shows up and saves her. Discouraged, Kara almost gives up, but after a pep talk from Alex and a hologram of Kara’s mother, Alura, Kara fights back and manages to defeat Vartox.

The episode ends with James Olsen revealing that he was sent by Superman to watch over Kara (which thrills her because she has a bit of a crush on him). The final scene is of the main villain of the season, who is revealed to be Alura’s twin sister, Astra. Astra wants to conquer all of Earth and will not be stopped. She orders the death of her niece.

I really like the direction this series is taking. Everything is being set up for a pretty action- packed season and I like that the main villain is of the House of El. That will make the conflict really interesting once Kara finds out who is pulling the strings of all the alien convicts.

Kara and Alex’s relationship is really great and was developed nicely during this episode. Alex admitting her jealousy of Kara’s abilities and happiness that Kara wanted to be normal was sad and added a great dynamic to their relationship. It will be interesting to see how they continue to work with each other in the episodes to come.
