10 Totally Surprising Emmy Nomination Snubs

The 70th Annual Emmy Award nominations were announced on Thursday morning and while many fan-favorite shows received nominations, we can’t help but feel that there were some major oversights this year. With so many incredible series available on television and streaming, it was bound to happen, but still, we’d like to take a look at 10 totally surprising Emmy nomination snubs from this year’s announcements.

10 Totally Surprising Emmy Nomination Snubs

Mandy Moore – This Is Us

NBC’s This Is Us earned several deserving nominations this year, including two Outstanding Actor nods for Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown, however, Mandy Moore was completely overlooked for a nomination. Moore definitely stepped up her acting game in the second season of the series and broke our hearts as we watched her character Rebecca Pearson completely break down in the moments after Jack’s death. That scene alone is deserving of some recognition.

Justin Hartley – This Is Us

Much like Moore, Justin Hartley took his character, Kevin Pearson, to a whole new level in This Is Us‘s second season. Hartley’s portrayal of Kevin’s struggle with substance abuse was nothing short of phenomenal. It’s hard to believe that Justin was overlooked for a nomination this year when Kevin’s storyline was pretty much the heart of the season.

Freddie Highmore – The Good Doctor

Yet another television season goes by and still no Emmy nomination for Freddie Highmore. Highmore captivates audiences as Dr. Shaun Murphy on ABC’s The Good Doctor, and after being overlooked for his role on Bates Motel for five seasons, he seemed like a shoe-in for some recognition this year. The show itself was also a favorite to earn a nomination. Sadly, Highmore and The Good Doctor will have to look forward to next year.

John Goodman – Roseanne

Putting the show’s cancellation controversy aside, John Goodman’s portrayal of Dan Conner was a bright spot on an already amazing series revival. Laurie Metcalf did receive a nomination for her supporting role as Jackie, but Goodman really shined in the series.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington – Game of Thrones

This was the first year that both Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were submitted for consideration in the lead actress and actor categories rather than as supporting roles. Both actors stepped up their game in Game of Thrones‘ seventh season as well as received increased screen time, but it apparently wasn’t enough to earn the Mother of Dragons and King in the North a nom.

Kyle MacLachlan – Twin Peaks

The Twin Peaks revival season was one of the most buzzed about shows from this past television season. Kyle MacLauchlan appeared to be a shoe-in for an Outstanding Actor nomination and the absence of his name from the category is surprising. Also surprising is the fact that the show was completely overlooked in the Limited Series category.

Modern Family

ABC’s Modern Family has a long legacy of dominating the Outstanding Comedy Series category over the course of its ten seasons. This year, however, the series was not nominated thus breaking a long streak of Emmy history.

Roseanne

Again, putting the controversial nature of the show’s cancellation aside, the Roseanne revival was one of the best series on television this past season. The show was funny while unbiasedly addressing many current issues families in America are currently facing today. The show broke records over at ABC and, for sure, we thought it would get something regardless of the controversy surrounding its star.

Will & Grace

NBC’s Will & Grace was a favorite to receive multiple nominations for Outstanding Comedy as well as for its series stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Sean Hayes though no nominations were given. Megan Mullally, however, did receive a supporting actress nod which we feel is well deserved.
